In Henan, generation after generation of young people start out at local universities and then step into a broader world of technology. Cheng Lu, a distinguished alumnus of the School of Software at Nanyang Institute of Technology, is one of the most representative among them.

Cheng is a technologist who has spent fifteen years deeply involved in developer ecosystems and open‑source technology localization. A graduate of the School of Software at Nanyang Institute of Technology, he went on to lead multiple Google developer initiatives in China, helping to drive the adoption of Flutter in the Chinese market. He serves as a review committee member for Senior Member elevation at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and is a Hugging Face Fellow in the world’s largest open‑source AI community.

Not long ago, we conducted an in‑depth interview with Cheng via video link. Just before the call, he had finished a full day of IEEE Senior Member review meetings. As an invited member of the review committee, he works with experts around the world to evaluate applications from a wide range of technical and engineering fields, assessing whether candidates have achieved the level required for Senior Member status in terms of research output, engineering practice, and industry impact. His participation in this evaluation work is itself a recognition of his professional standing in engineering and technical community building.

“I was born and raised in Henan, and I am an engineer trained by Nanyang Institute of Technology,” Cheng says with particular warmth when speaking of his hometown and alma mater. “Many of the things people see later on were first sparked in the School of Software at Nanyang Institute of Technology.”

1. An engineering journey ignited at Nanyang Institute of Technology

Recalling his years studying at the School of Software, Cheng uses a few key words: openness, inclusiveness, and a willingness to give young people opportunities.

He specifically mentions Dean Liu of the School of Software and several heads of teaching and research groups. “What the School gave us back then was a cutting‑edge, open, and inclusive environment for learning and practice,” he recalls. “Our professors encouraged us to experiment with the latest technologies and created many project opportunities right on campus. They pushed us to experiment boldly and were there with full support at critical moments.”

In Cheng’s eyes, the relationship between faculty and students at the School of Software felt more like that of friends than of traditional teachers and pupils. Cutting‑edge technology trends could be debated in class, while after class they would discuss product ideas and career plans together. When students had questions, they could knock on a professor’s door at any time; when a promising new direction emerged, the typical response from a teacher was, “Go ahead and try it first—tell us what support you need.”

“What we learned in technology classes was never confined to textbooks; it stayed in step with the frontiers of the industry,” Cheng recalls. “In 2010, often called the first year of mobile internet in China, our professors were already introducing us to systematic knowledge about mobile internet. Many of our assignments ended up becoming small but fully functioning products.”

It was in this environment that he developed his core identity as an engineer: building a solid foundation while applying technology to real‑world scenarios whenever possible.

2. Founding a Google Developer Group in Nanyang while still a student

Around 2010, when mobile internet was just beginning to take off across China, Cheng was still an undergraduate. Together with several like‑minded classmates and supportive professors, he did something that seemed quite ahead of its time on campus—he founded a Google Developer Group (GDG) and began inviting engineers from major companies across the country to Nanyang to share their technical experience.

“We did a lot of research at the time because we wanted to bring mature global models of technology learning communities onto our campus,” Cheng recalls. By then, the School of Software at Nanyang Institute of Technology had already incorporated a great deal of cutting‑edge content into its curriculum, and the School strongly supported student‑led technical events. That gave him a great deal of confidence.

With guidance from Google and organizers of other Google Developer Groups across China, and with the backing of the School, the Nanyang Google Developer Group quickly held its preparatory and inaugural meetings and was formally established. The community served students at Nanyang Institute of Technology and other local universities, and was open to local technology enthusiasts. It regularly hosted technical salons and hands‑on workshops on topics such as Android development, web technologies, and cloud services.

Cheng and his peers reached out to speakers through all kinds of channels, inviting engineers from major companies in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and other cities to give talks in classrooms at Nanyang Institute of Technology and share their first‑hand experience. For some of these engineers, it was their first time visiting Nanyang, and they were pleasantly surprised by the students’ enthusiasm for new technologies.

To make each event a success, the team took on everything themselves—from poster design and venue setup to equipment testing and content planning. “During those years, the School of Software at Nanyang Institute of Technology was buzzing with technical events,” Cheng says. “Many students first truly felt in those activities that what they were learning in class connected directly to the wider world of technology.”

These experiences of organizing communities and experimenting with entrepreneurship on campus not only gave many students in Nanyang their first systematic exposure to the technology ecosystems of companies like Google, but also placed Cheng early on at the intersection of “technology and people” and “frontier and local.” This laid a solid foundation for his later work on much larger stages.

3. From campus projects to the global technology ecosystem

After graduating from Nanyang Institute of Technology, Cheng entered the tech industry, working on developer relations, technical content, and communities. Thanks to the extensive practical experience he had accumulated in school and in developer communities, he soon encountered a turning point in his career.

At the time, Google was building and expanding its Developer Relations team for Greater China. The Nanyang Google Developer Group that Cheng had founded caught the attention of Luan Yue (Bill Luan), then head of Developer Relations for Google Greater China. Widely regarded in the industry as the pioneer who systematically introduced Google’s developer programs into China, Luan, after learning more about Cheng’s work in campus communities and local developer ecosystems, invited him to join Google China’s Developer Relations team so the group could better understand and guide the adoption of Google technologies nationwide.

“Joining Google was a huge leap in platform and perspective for someone as young as I was at the time,” Cheng says. “I am deeply grateful for the trust of my professors at the School of Software in Nanyang Institute of Technology, and especially for the mentorship and recognition from Luan Yue at a critical moment in my career. That gave me the chance to extend what I had been doing in Nanyang to the entire country and to the global developer ecosystem.

“In my heart, Luan is not only the pioneer who systematically brought Google’s developer programs to China—widely known in the industry as the ‘father of Google developer communities in China’—but also a senior leader with a broad vision, high standards, and a genuine commitment to nurturing young people. Being able to work alongside such a heavyweight mentor at the start of my career allowed me to grow both rapidly and solidly.”

During his time at Google, Cheng participated in and later led the promotion and localization of technologies such as Android, TensorFlow, and Flutter within China’s developer ecosystem. Enabling developers to truly master these cutting‑edge technologies, he notes, is far more than a matter of publishing documentation or organizing a few launch events.

Over those years, he and his team built official Chinese‑language technical content channels, optimized learning paths, took part in large‑scale translation and review of technical documentation, and promoted localization of toolchains and adaptation to China’s network environment. Through technical conferences, in‑person training, and structured learning programs, they created opportunities for many front‑line engineers to systematically engage with advanced technologies.

In just three years, he planned and organized more than 200 technical events, enabling millions of Chinese developers to systematically encounter and use these technologies. These initiatives came to be regarded as key pillars connecting domestic developers with frontier technologies and laid a solid foundation for Google’s developer ecosystem in China.

4. Embracing open‑source AI to help more people ride the next wave

After leaving Google in 2018, Cheng founded a technology consulting firm, continuing to provide developer ecosystem and open‑source strategy services to technology companies including Google, Amazon, and Microsoft. His work and perspective expanded further to a global scale.

As the open‑source AI wave gathered momentum, he was recommended by his former Google colleague Wang Tiezhen—now Head of Asia‑Pacific at Hugging Face—to become a Hugging Face Fellow. In this role, he has been helping to drive education, application, and ecosystem building for the world’s largest open‑source AI community in China, enabling developers to remain competitive in the era of large models.

The Hugging Face Fellow program is an honorary track established for a small number of technologists who have made outstanding contributions to the community. There are currently only eighteen Fellows worldwide, and Cheng is one of them. Through this role, he has led and participated in numerous open‑source AI initiatives and events tailored for developers in China.

In an era of rapid technological change, one principle he consistently upholds is this: no matter how advanced or complex a technology is, someone must make it practically usable and create opportunities for all who are willing to learn to take part.

5. A message to current students at Nanyang Institute of Technology

When asked why he has always been willing to invest so much energy in communities, education, and practical programs, Cheng’s answer is simple: “I grew up in exactly this kind of environment.”

He says, “Many stories look inevitable in hindsight, but I have always been very clear that the credit actually belongs to the educators who have quietly dedicated themselves over many years. Because some people are willing to treat education as a century‑long endeavor—not rushing to see results, but steadily paving roads, breaking new ground, and lifting others up—young people’s attempts have soil in which to grow, and years later everything seems to fall into place naturally.”

Cheng adds, “So every time I pass on new technologies or new knowledge to more people, I think in particular of my teachers back then and feel genuine admiration for their patience and vision. In a sense, I am simply walking along the road they paved, doing my part to provide education and services for developers.”

For students currently studying at Nanyang Institute of Technology, Cheng offers some very concrete advice.

First, build a strong foundation, but do not equate “foundation” with just drilling textbooks and exams. Master the fundamentals—data structures, algorithms, operating systems, networking—while also using projects to put them into practice. You will find that only knowledge used repeatedly in real problems becomes your capability for the future.

Second, stay sensitive to the frontier, but do not let “hype anxiety” push you around. At each stage, choose one or two major tracks to follow over the long term—for example, mobile, AI, cloud‑native, or front‑end engineering. Once you choose, go deep and thorough. Being at the frontier is not about chasing every hotspot; it is about building your own judgment about how technology evolves.

Third, do more hands‑on work, and the earlier the better. Small but real projects matter more than grand plans that never leave the page. Do not wait until you feel “ready”—start with a tool, a small app, a contribution to open source, or a single talk. Finish small projects end to end, ship them, and iterate. That will train you far more than having a pile of half‑finished attempts.

Fourth, step into communities as early as possible. Campus tech clubs, local developer events, and online open‑source communities are all accelerators for learning and for being seen. You do not need to wait until you are “good enough” to participate; communities are precisely where you become stronger quickly. Ask more questions, reflect more, share more—you will gain far more in return than you expect.

Fifth, do not underestimate the value of communication and collaboration. Growth as an engineer is not just about writing code; it also involves explaining complex problems clearly and organizing work and people. Those who can express themselves clearly and drive collaboration forward tend to gain access to larger platforms earlier.

He concludes: “Do not underestimate your starting point. Where you start only defines where you stand now; it does not determine how far you can go. As long as you are willing to learn a bit more and take one more step, treating every attempt as laying one more stone for your future, graduates of Nanyang Institute of Technology can just as well stand at the global frontier of technology.”

Cheng’s career story is a technical journey that begins in Henan, is ignited at Nanyang Institute of Technology, and continues toward ever larger stages. Over the past fifteen years, the projects he has led or participated in have influenced the learning paths and technology choices of countless developers. “Bringing Technology to More People”

A conversation with developer ecosystem and open‑source localization expert Cheng Lu

Cheng Lu is a technologist who has spent fifteen years deeply involved in developer ecosystems and open‑source technologies. When we connected with Cheng Lu for this interview, he had just finished a full day of meetings for the IEEE Senior Member review committee. IEEE is one of the world’s largest and most influential professional technical organizations, bringing together more than 500,000 engineers and researchers across over 190 countries and regions. The standards published by IEEE underpin the global adoption and application of key technologies such as Wi‑Fi, Ethernet, and artificial intelligence.

As a specially invited member of the Senior Member review committee, Cheng joined experts from around the world to review candidate applications across different technical and engineering domains, assessing whether their research results, engineering practice, and industry impact have reached the level required for “Senior Member” status. Fewer than 10% of IEEE members worldwide receive this title. In such a system, he is standing on the side of the reviewers, helping to judge “who has already become a benchmark in the field.”

The moment the video call started, our first impression was: this is a typical state for someone deeply engaged in technical work—clean, straightforward, with a calm and measured tone and crisp, precise expression. In his eyes, there is the curiosity and drive characteristic of a young engineer, combined with the steadiness and sense of proportion that come from long‑term, hands‑on practice.

During a full day of committee work, Cheng had gone through a large number of lists of achievements. Compared with titles and numbers, he prefers to return to the essence of the question: What problems did the applicant use technology and research to solve, and how many people did it ultimately benefit? Our conversation naturally began from there: how can the latest technological and scientific advances truly reach more people?

From Google onward: realizing that “technology dissemination” is a system‑level endeavor

In 2015, Cheng joined Google China’s Developer Relations team. It was a period of explosive growth for China’s mobile internet, but also a time when there was a noticeable gap between Chinese developers and the global frontier of technology. He became one of the key leaders driving several core Google developer programs in China: from Android to TensorFlow, from Angular to Firebase, and later the rapidly growing Flutter.

Getting these technologies truly into the hands of Chinese developers was far more than a matter of publishing some documentation or holding a launch event. During those years, his work included: building official Chinese‑language technical content channels; redesigning learning paths; reviewing and coordinating large‑scale translation of technical documentation; promoting localization of toolchains and adaptation to local network conditions; building communities and offline education programs; and establishing technical collaboration mechanisms with universities and enterprises. These “infrastructure‑level” efforts, often unnoticed by outsiders, determine whether a technology can really take root.

Over three years, Cheng planned and organized more than 200 technical events, enabling millions of Chinese developers to systematically engage with cutting‑edge technologies. These events were seen as important bridges between Chinese developers and frontier technologies, and they laid a solid foundation for Google’s developer ecosystem in China.

“Whether a technology can truly land depends on the learning path and the toolchain. This has never been simple ‘promotion’; it’s a system‑level project,” Cheng says. Through these projects, he gradually transitioned from being a pure engineer to a technical communication expert who orchestrates content, localization, and community ecosystems.

Flutter: How China became one of the world’s most vibrant ecosystems

Flutter is Google’s open‑source, cross‑platform application development framework. By the end of 2024, it had more than one million monthly active developers worldwide and had become one of the top five open‑source projects on GitHub by annual contributions.

When Flutter first entered China, Cheng was one of the earliest local leaders responsible for its rollout. In a short period of time, he led efforts to build the documentation system, local toolchains, and development environments. Very quickly, China grew into one of the most active Flutter developer communities globally.

Under his leadership, Flutter’s localization in China achieved four core breakthroughs: establishing a usable, coherent Chinese‑language documentation system; completing SDK and network environment adaptation; driving enterprise‑level adoption by companies such as Alibaba, Tencent, ByteDance, and Baidu; and building a complete developer ecosystem loop.

The prosperity of Flutter in China was not an accident. Behind its evolution lies a longer, clearer thread: only when a technology crosses language barriers and other obstacles to reach a much broader group of people can a truly new ecosystem grow. What Cheng did was to build the foundational infrastructure that allowed a global technology to take root and thrive in China.

Globally, there are not many local leaders who can simultaneously drive documentation systems, local toolchains, enterprise‑level adoption, and a closed‑loop community ecosystem. This also brought Cheng sustained support and attention within Google and the Flutter community, eventually leading to his involvement in the Flutter open‑source project organization itself.

After Google: continuing to connect technology and people

Why are “connectors” more important than ever in a technological age?

When asked about the role of “connector,” Cheng replied calmly: “Someone has to take these technologies forward, one step at a time, otherwise they only ever belong to a small group of people.”

In his view, technological breakthroughs are certainly important, but what truly changes the world is the process by which more people can understand, use, and benefit from these technologies. Cheng has chosen to stand at the intersection of front‑stage and back‑stage: on the one hand, he designs learning paths and ecosystem strategies; on the other, he validates those strategies through community practice.

For him, being a “connector” is both a long‑term career choice and the answer he arrived at after repeatedly returning to the essence of the problem.

Being a connector in the age of technology

We learned that Cheng and several colleagues from Hugging Face are currently working on translating a book about artificial intelligence technologies. In his view, translation is not simply a conversion between languages; it is the process of turning knowledge that “only a few people can understand” into something that “many people can grasp.”

Looking back at Cheng’s career, one can clearly see a consistent through‑line: enabling advanced technologies to be understood, used, and ultimately shared by more people. Over the past decade and more, the projects he has led or participated in have directly influenced the technology choices and learning paths of a large number of Chinese developers and major technology companies.

In the surging tides of technological change, what may be scarce is not just the next new model or framework, but the people who actually make technology land in the real world. Cheng Lu is one such “super connector,” facilitating the exchange of technology and ideas across the globe.

I was interviewed by the China.com Technology Channel about Echo Bridge, an AI‑driven communication concept my team and I designed for people who are deaf or hard of hearing, as well as those with speech impairments. In hospitals, banks, and classrooms, most people can complete basic communication simply by saying a few sentences. For many deaf and hard‑of‑hearing people, and for people with speech impairments, the absence of suitable assistive tools often means they have to explain their situation bit by bit through writing or typing. The very same tasks end up demanding far more time and energy.

Echo Bridge is designed to change exactly that moment.

Winner of a 2025 Red Dot Design Concept Award in the “Communication Technology” category, Echo Bridge is Cheng Lu and his team’s attempt to explore the frontier of assistive technology. Cheng, the project lead, has long been active in developer and open‑source communities. Over the past decade, his work has focused on building developer ecosystems and promoting new technologies, helping more developers understand and adopt them. This time, however, the product is aimed at a relatively niche group: people who are deaf or hard of hearing, a community that is easily overlooked in everyday life.

Visually, Echo Bridge is a compact set of devices: a desktop base unit paired with two wireless terminals. The base unit is equipped with two wide‑angle cameras and one overhead camera with radar, allowing it to “see” the user’s gestures, facial expressions, and lip movements from multiple angles at once. For sign languages, these details are not “auxiliary information” — they are part of the language itself. True silent expression is usually formed by the combination of hand movements, facial expressions, and mouth shapes together.

Once these images are captured, the AI system in the background takes over. Using computer vision, it recognizes movements and expressions, and then combines them with language models to translate these silent expressions into text or speech for the hearing party. Cheng describes it as “an interpreter sitting between the two sides,” whose role is to pass on the meaning from both ends as completely as possible.

Unlike many hardware products that have already entered the market, Echo Bridge remains at the concept‑design stage. There is no mass‑production data yet, and systematic user testing has not begun. Cheng is candid about this: “Right now it is a ‘sketch’ we’ve drawn, not a product that can be put into use immediately.” In his view, the significance of this “sketch” is not only in presenting the rough outline of a product, but in placing a clear direction on the table. “We want to first surface this problem, map out possible technical routes, and let more people see them. In the future, if we find the right partners, or more people are willing to join us in refining it, then when the time is right, we can turn it into a real product.”

Looking back at his motivation, he says the starting point was actually quite simple:

“Over the past decade or so, my work has mainly been about technical evangelism and ecosystem building for developers — helping more developers and companies adopt new technologies faster and better, so they can use these tools to improve productivity and create more valuable products. That in itself is already very meaningful.

For most people, new technology usually means a slightly faster phone, clearer photos, more features in an app. All of that is great; at its core it just makes life a bit more convenient. But for some people with hearing impairments, a well‑designed technology product offers more than convenience; it determines whether they can speak for themselves.

In the past, they often had to rely on family members to interpret for them, or to write everything down. Many subtle feelings were hard to express fully, and the other side could not really hear them. If a tool like Echo Bridge could help them ‘translate’ what they want to say more completely, so that others can understand them on the spot, that shift — from almost not being able to speak to finally being properly heard — is, to me, something very concrete and deeply valuable.”

Red Dot’s recognition of Echo Bridge comes not only from its technical concept, but also from its design attitude. The physical design deliberately avoids the cold aesthetics of medical equipment, leaning instead toward familiar consumer electronics. It looks unobtrusive on a desk and does not feel “special” in the hand. The design team hopes it will be a tool anyone can use naturally, rather than a marker that constantly reminds its user, “You are different from others.”

In Cheng’s view, accessibility should not be treated merely as a narrow niche market, but as a litmus test for the deeper character of technology. “Technology is inherently meant to serve the public; that universal value is the basis for its existence,” he adds. “At the same time, we hope more of the tech community can pay attention to this space, so that the same technologies are applied more often to groups who are easily overlooked, creating products that truly change their lives.”

Echo Bridge may still be only a concept design, but it has already sent a clear signal: in an era of rapidly advancing artificial intelligence, technology can certainly continue to serve large‑scale everyday needs, and it is also fully capable of bringing more meaningful innovation to the field of accessibility. Cheng and his team hope this small concept can become a starting point — one that prompts more people to see, reflect on, and even step into this area, working together to build a dependable bridge for those “silent expressions” that have long struggled to be heard.

1. The Net::ReadTimeout Trap

Symptom

Root Cause

Discourse defaults to STARTTLS on port 587. On port 465, however, Alibaba Cloud expects a TLS handshake immediately. If you try STARTTLS there, Discourse first opens a plain‑text connection, then issues a STARTTLS command. The server rejects the clear‑text hello and the connection hangs—hence the timeout.

Analogy

• 465 is “put on the hazmat suit before entering.”

• 587 is “step inside, chat for a second, then suit up if privacy is required.”

Fix

Force Discourse to speak TLS from the very first byte by:

1. Using port 465

2. Disabling STARTTLS

Root Cause

Alibaba Cloud insists that the envelope sender (MAIL FROM) match the authenticated user. Discourse, by default, tries to send notifications as noreply@YOURDOMAIN.TLD, which mismatches YOURNAME@YOURDOMAIN.TLD (your SMTP credential).

Fix

Tell Discourse to use the same address for notifications:

Ideas are ignored or overriden. Conversations after group meetings reveal that people failed to express their ideas or feelings.

6. Personal feelings are hidden.

There is fear that these are too explosive if brought out.

They may be suppressed by those who fear conflict, or there may be a "Tyranny of the Minority" in which an individual or sub-group is so aggressive that the majority accedes to their wishes in order to preserve the peace.

I once heard a pastor at a church say that they're like ships sailing out of the harbor. Yes, at some point, as they get past the horizon, we can't see them anymore. My partner in the Arnold Classic and my mentor, Jim Lorimer, gets the credit for this advice. We were sitting in his office, planning one of the early Arnold Classics, and he mentioned a sponsor we needed to call. Like a good student, I made a note in my notebook. Jim said, "What are you doing?" and I told him, "Duh, I'm writing on my to-do list to call the guy." Jim said, "Arnold, the phone is right there. Just do it now, and you don't have to write anything down." This lesson has saved me from a lot of to-do lists and a lot of stress throughout my life. When something can be done immediately, just get it done. Don't write it down. Clear it from your plate, and you never have to think about it again. So many people walk around with to-do lists filled with items like "call a plumber, call the insurance company, make a doctor's appointment," and if they just did those things, they wouldn't need to stress about them. Do it now.

34. Treat the world as your laboratory and your work as an experiment. In my very young days, when someone trained differently than me, I had a tendency to call it Mickey Mouse. But, I was always willing to try it out. I remember Vince Gironda, who owned one of the biggest bodybuilding gyms in LA, showed me this side-lying deltoid exercise with a light dumbbell. Of course, I called it Mickey Mouse, but then I did a bunch of sets to test it for myself. The next day, I couldn't move my arms. They were so sore that the Mickey Mouse exercise became a staple for me. It is very easy to look at someone who thinks differently or does things differently than you and just decide they're wrong. That's the comfortable path. Why not just try their way? What's the worst that can happen? If you act like you're a scientist doing an experiment instead of like a televangelist who knows it all, then you'll confirm some of your beliefs, but you'll also challenge others and learn new ones.

35. Surround yourself with people who think differently than you. In the age of social media, it's easier than ever to build your own chamber and protect yourself from ideas you don't agree with. Don't do it. When I became Governor, I appointed almost as many Democrats as Republicans to be part of my administration. Some of the Republicans I appointed were much more conservative than I was. I appointed more women than any Governor before me and more minorities. I didn't do that so people would praise me. I did that because I know how a white Republican man thinks. I don't need people to tell me that. I need people around me to fill in my blind spots because the job isn't to be the Governor of all the white Republican men in California. The job was to be the Governor for 40 million Californians who all think differently and come from different backgrounds. Having people who thought differently than me around the table helped create lively debates, and those debates resulted in out-of-the-box ideas to serve the people. If you're only talking to people who agree with you, you're missing out on at least 50% of the brainpower available.

37. Do a "murder board" before your big decisions. I do this for any big interview, press tour, or appearance. You can do it before job interviews or presentations. Get together a couple of people you trust. Tell them to ask you every single question they can possibly imagine. Hard questions, crazy questions. Answer them. When you have trouble with one, talk through it with them, and then try it again. This way, when it's time for the real thing, nothing can take you by surprise. I told you: reps, reps, reps.

I believe that getting the little things right is the low-hanging fruit, and if you don't do it, you risk getting sloppy and taking shortcuts when it really does matter. When you can control something, it doesn't matter how small it is. It matters because you have the power to change it. And every time you change something when you have the power, that's a rep to remind yourself you can create change. It's a rep to remind yourself the shortcuts just cheat you. It's a rep to remind yourself to get the basics right.

39. Sometimes, nothing fckin' matters. There are other times that my team makes fun of me because I am so relaxed. We will come to someone else's event where I'm supposed to speak, and they'll tell me they're sorry, but we don't know when I'll be on stage. I say, "It doesn't fckin matter." Because it doesn't. We don't have control. Trying to control something we can't will only make all of us stressed out, and that won't help anybody.

40. In fact, most of the time, nothing matters. Focus on the basics. Focus on what you can control. Nothing else matters. I will have people who have never worked out in their life come up to me and ask, "Should I do a push-pull split, or a bodybuilding split, or full body workouts?" I say, "It doesn't matter. Anything is more than you're doing now. Just do something." People will ask about supplements to help their diet when all they eat is processed food. It doesn't matter. Get the basics right!

41. Don't major in the minor. There are so many people who worry about the last 5% so much that they never start working on the first 95%. Which supplements should I take? Which workout is optimal? Which diet is best? If you haven't gotten the basics in order — training routinely and eating mostly real food — you're wasting your time. Approximately 95% of your results will come from a basic foundation of training and good food.

42. Don't optimize. Just start. Stop your research. It's how you procrastinate. Most of the time, we all know what we need to do. This is where our brains become our enemies. Instead of just starting, our brains tell us we need to research and find the perfect plan, so instead of doing some squats and pushups and drinking a protein shake, we can sit in front of a screen reading about the perfect diet while eating a donut.

I know a lot of people who will start a workout plan that's supposed to be every other day, and then as soon as something comes up and they miss a day, they give up. You're never going to be perfect. None of us are. Just accept it. Progress is about moving forward. So you can only do two workout days this week instead of three? That's still progress compared to zero workouts. Just keep moving forward.

Everyone immediately felt the echoes of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, so even though I had total faith in my team, I got down to San Diego immediately. I went to the stadium and the other evacuation site at the fairgrounds, and I asked the people on the ground what they needed. Baby formula, diapers, cots, dialysis machines. I got on the phone and called the grocery stores and the military bases and hospitals to marshal supplies all night. The next morning, before I went to sleep, I came back, and the people who had told me what they needed were surprised to see me. I needed to hear from them that the supplies they needed had arrived. I needed to follow through. Don't assume things are finished. Make damn sure they are.

46. Don't do half-reps. It hurts me every time I see someone in the gym doing a lat pulldown or a curl or a bench press halfway. Sure, they can do a lot of reps. But if they half-ass their basic exercises, what else are they half-assing? When you cheat an exercise, you only cheat yourself. Whatever you do, go all out. Otherwise, you'll always have to wonder what would have happened if you gave it a full effort.

I once learned all the challenges of cleaning up all of the waste a film production creates. It was fascinating! Train your curiosity muscle by listening to people as often as you can.

54. You might think that talking is the best way to open up doors, but listening opens more doors than you would guess. I'm like a sponge. I love to soak up information and stories and advice. I think this is why I've had the opportunity to meet people like Nelson Mandela, Mikhail Gorbachev, and every President since I came to this country. People can sense when you want to listen, and it makes them want to share.

Like everything, you can get better with reps. When I wanted to get into Hollywood, I became friends with a very famous comedian, Milton Berle. I asked him to help me with comedy. Milton would write jokes for me, and then he would critique my timing. (He wasn't very gentle about it, I remember a few, "Schwarzenegger, you Nazi, you fucked it up!") The more I practiced, by getting in a joke in every TV appearance, the better I became.

59. Develop a sense of humor about yourself, too. The more you can laugh at yourself, the happier you'll be. One way to stress just a little less about life is to laugh at yourself instead of beating yourself up.

61. But be brutally honest with yourself. When I say, "Don't beat yourself up," I don't mean that if your goal is to lose 20 pounds and you're stuck that you should ignore that you're eating dessert every day. You need to be honest with yourself without any negativity. Talk to yourself how you would talk to a friend you're concerned about. Honesty allows you to figure out a plan to move on from failures. Abusing yourself over it just burns the energy for planning and moving on.

62. If you ever feel stuck, pick three small things you can focus on. Make them so small it's impossible for you to fail. If your goals are to learn a new language, get in shape, and read more, write all three things on a notecard, and write "5 minutes a day." When you wake up, do 5 minutes of reading, 5 minutes of pushups and squats, and 5 minutes of language practice before you brush your teeth. Make a tally for each habit on the notecard, and keep it on your nightstand. No matter what, you get that tally every day. Even if you're about to climb into bed and you realize you didn't do all three things, you do it and then go to sleep.

63. Slowly grow your goals. Progressive resistance works in the gym and in life, right? After a month, take one of your goals and make it 10 minutes a day.

Just to show you the compounding power of progressive resistance in life, if you started in January with 5-minute workouts and added 5 minutes each month, by June, you'd be training a half hour a day. 65. Harness the power of small wins. The reason I say to start with small goals is that you need to learn the value of any wins. If you can start your day with three, 5-minute wins, then you're going to feel that you accomplished something. And you did! Celebrate those little wins. Because here is the reality: you need fuel. Celebrating the little wins teaches you that those little wins compound and build up.

66. You need momentum, not motivation. No matter how fired up you are, motivation will run out. Believe me. I've been training for 62 years. There is no motivation that lasts that long. There are going to be days — probably soon — when you don't want to get out of bed. Those are the days when you need momentum, not motivation. You need a routine. It is going to suck. Just do it.

67. You need patience. It takes time for little wins to build. When you look at someone successful, it's easy to imagine it happening overnight, but it's almost never true. They just kept moving forward, sometimes with big jumps, sometimes with tiny steps, and I guarantee there were days they went backward or stayed still. But the trend went upward. I see this all the time in our app. People will say, "I lost 20 pounds in the last 4 months, thank you," and other members respond, "Wow! Unbelievable!" But at the same time, you'll see people say, "I only lost a pound this week, what am I doing wrong?" Do the math. 4 months is about 18 weeks. The big transformation looks huge, but it's 1.1 pounds per month. Most people won't get excited about progress that slow — until they see what it means over 4 or 6 or 12 months. In a year, that would be 57 pounds of weight loss. Sadly, most people will never see that success because they'll be too impatient to see how small wins can build up into huge success. Be patient.

68. Find joy, not happiness. I think one of the nicest things anybody ever said about me came from Jim Lorimer. He said, "If I needed one word to describe Arnold, it's 'joy.' Now, I believe joy is different than happiness. Joy is deeper. People chase happiness, but I think they should chase joy. Happiness is fleeting. You can feel joy when you're struggling. You can feel joy when you're grieving the loss of a dear friend. Joy, to me, is having a sense of purpose. It's what gives meaning to life.

70. The world isn't as broken as your phone makes it seem. Read your social media feed. Now imagine going to a gym, or a bar, or church, and hearing people talk like that. You'd say, "It's enough already — stop fucking whining." But that's normal on social media! Get out there in the real world as often as you can. Talk to real people, not avatars. You will not find joy on social media.

Typically, LinkedIn might display error messages like, "Sorry, we were unable to retrieve information about your link. Please try another link," or "Cannot display preview. You can post as is, or try another link."

Understanding the Problem

These issues generally occur because LinkedIn has restrictions against certain domains, such as mp.weixin.qq.com and *.workers.dev. This results in LinkedIn being unable to fetch the necessary details from the link provided.

Seems the https://www.linkedin.com/voyager/api/graphql API got nothing from the URL:

Solution Through Cloudflare Workers

The Cloudflare Workers platform enables you to deploy serverless code instantly across the globe through Cloudflare's data centers. With Cloudflare Workers, we can deploy a simple logic that bypasses LinkedIn’s domain restrictions.

We can use Workers to establish a reverse proxy that specifically handles requests from LinkedIn to access WeChat content, which means when a LinkedIn request is detected (User-Agent: LinkedInBot), then the proxy logic runs; otherwise, for regular users accessing, it should 301 redirect to the original WeChat article.

Let’s do it!

1. Set Up & Deploy a Cloudflare Worker

Register with Cloudflare, create a new worker, and insert the following code snippet:

2. Domain Binding for Your Worker

Since the *.workers.dev were blocked by LinkedIn, you need to using your custom domains for this service. Navigate to your Worker settings, then to Triggers, and add a subdomain from your account:

Wait for the issuance of a domain certificate, which should display 'Active' once ready.

3. Replace with your Worker URL.

Replace the mp.weixin.qq.com part of the WeChat link with your custom domain. For example, replace:

to:

https://mp.3588837.xyz/s/dekkArgbpMDrZw-_rUKIGQ

The new URL should successfully display the content preview on LinkedIn:

4. Using My Workers’ URL

Alternatively, if you prefer not to set up your own service, you can use the one I have prepared by simply replacing

mp.weixin.qq.com

mp.cheng.lu

By implementing this workaround using Cloudflare Workers, you can enhance your LinkedIn profile’s engagement and ensure your audience has access to critical WeChat content without disruptions.

The language barrier does not stop Angular getting all the love from Chinese developers. There is new blood joining our community everyday. Some of them are newcomers, some of them have been using Angular in isolation for a long time without the support from the community. There are more than 4000 active users in our two Angular QQ chat groups, which is nothing compared to the sheer size of the whole Angular community in China. We felt that we needed to do more to enhance the influence of the community so that it could reach and help more developers.
语言的障碍并没有阻挡住中国的开发者们对Angular的热情。每天都有新人加入我们这个社区。他们有的是初学者、有的是在并没有社区支持的情况下自学了Angular很久的人。在我们两个Angular QQ群里，有4000千多名活跃的成员，但是他们仍旧远远比不上全中国Angular社区的巨大数量。我们认为我们需要加强Angular社区的影响，使得它能够影响到以及帮助更多的开发者。

We chose official document localization as a starting point.
为此，我们选择了“翻译官方文档”作为突破口。

As a large open source project, Angular 2 is in continuous development and its documents will also be constantly updated. “Complete the localization and leave it alone” obviously does not meet the requirement as a copy of an obsolete document could be misleading. We needed a new approach.
作为一个大型开源代码的项目，Angular 2处在不断的开发中，它的文档也将会被不断地更新。显然，“一次性翻译完，然后再也不管”的模式是无法满足需求的，一份过时的文档有时候甚至会误导读者。我们因此需要采用一种新的、能够保持持续更新的翻译方式。

The new approach we adopted is Git-based. We forked a copy of angular.io and appended the translations right next to each of the corresponding paragraphs. This way, our repository is structurally identical to angular.io. We can pull and merge any changes from angular.io easily and update our translations accordingly. Git has enabled our effective collaboration across time zones. We have created a script to hide the original text post compilation. It also allows our users to toggle the original text by simply clicking on the translated text, or by clicking the (Show English) button in the upper right corner. This is extremely handy for us and community contributors when it is time to review the work.
我们决定所采用的这种新的方式是基于GitHub的。我们开了一个angular.io库的分支，并把译文直接追加在原文之后，这样，我们资源库的架构将和angular.io的保持一致。当原文发生变更时，我们就会发现这种变化，并可以借助工具相对轻松的进行合并并及时更新译文。Github还让我们可以有效地实现跨时区的协作、也帮助协调我们两位译者的更新。填补了时区差别造成的无法及时交流的盲点。把这些源文件编译之后，我们增加了一个额外的js文件，它会按照格式上的规约，在运行期间把原文隐藏掉，还能通过点击译文来让原文重新显示出来。这种方式对于自己校对和社区的合作者协助校对至关重要。

After over a month of hard working, our localized docs site finally caught up with angular.io.
经过一个多月的高强度翻译，我们的翻译稿（并完成了第一遍校对）终于赶上了在angular.io上的官方文档的更新进度。

Without knowing anyone on the Angular team yet, we sent an email to Naomi in the evening, Beijing time. She was online early, California time, and replied right away. A few hours later, we were collaborating with the core Angular team and the project was officially under way . This is an interesting case of effective global collaboration. Ralph was in Beijing, Luke was in Shanghai, Rex was in London and Naomi was in San Francisco.
虽然我们并不认识Angular产品部门的人，但我们还是于北京时间的晚上给Naomi发了个邮件告知她我们的工作结果。加州还是当地的早晨，Naomi很快就给我们回复了热情洋溢邮件，并把我们介绍给了程路。几个小时后， 我们和Angular产品部门的核心团队的协作就开始了。这是个有趣的在全球范围内进行有效合作的案例。汪志成在北京、程路在上海、叶志敏在伦敦，而Naomi在旧金山。

We joined the Angular organization on Github, created the angular/angular-cn repository for our project, and were welcomed to Angular's doc authoring team on Slack so that we could speak to the authors directly regarding their articles and be informed of any future updates. This greatly increased the accuracy and timeliness of our translation. We were also able to contribute ideas to help the authors improve their articles.
不仅如此，Naomi还把我们加入了github上的Angular开发组，并在组下给我们建立了一个专门用作翻译的仓库。她还把我们加入了文档作者的slack小组，让我们可以与Angular开发组亲密接触，及时了解文档的写作及更改计划。这帮助我们避免了很多无用功，并能直接跟作者讨论对原文理解不透的地方，确保译文准确无误。反过来，我们也通过这个渠道，对多处原文提出了修改意见。

To ensure that developers in China would have consistent access from a locally-hosted official domain, Google China's Developer Relations team helped us to secure angular.cn and we launched the site. When we made our work known to our Chinese community, more than 10% subscribers instantly “liked” the news in Ralph’s personal WeChat channel. Many volunteers started to provide valuable feedback on our work, many of whom preferred to be kept anonymous.  All they wanted was the feeling of being able to contribute to the community. Our work has also attracted many new Angular developers to the the community.
为了帮助在中国的开发者们能够从基于国内的服务器方便地得到统一和一致性的资源使用，谷歌开发技术推广部的中国团队帮助我们获得了angular.cn的域名并发布了这个网站。当我们向社区通告了我们的工作成果，10%以上的成员们马上在汪志成的微信朋友圈中点了赞。很多志愿者开始向我们的工作提供回馈，他们中的很多人甚至都不愿意署名，他们所追求的只是为社区贡献力量的感觉而已。我们的工作还吸引了很多原本在Angular开发者社区之外的开发者们来加入我们这个社区。

Although we expected a positive response from the community according to our past experience with Angular 1, we were still surprised with the overwhelming praises and positive feedback received. Bear in mind that some developers were skeptical about Angular 2’s brand new design approach initially. It looks like Angular 2 has eventually won their heart.
虽然早就从Angular 1的经验中就对社区的正面反响有所期待，但是这个新的网站的发布以及获得的反应仍然超出了我们的想象。要知道，有些人对Angular 2的全新设计曾经是持怀疑态度的。看来，Angular 2的这些优异特性还是赢得了他们的心。

Our work has received great acceptance and recognition in the community. It has helped many developer teams overcome the language barriers. Many teams have started or are preparing to adopt Angular 2 in their projects. There are also a huge amount of developers starting to learn and play with angular 2 in their open source projects.  The Chinese Angular community has become more active than ever since the launch of angular.cn. More and more developers have become involved in the community by actively exchanging ideas and helping solve other people’s issues.
我们的努力和工作成果获得了开发者社区的接受和认可，它帮助了中国的开发者们克服了语言的障碍。已经有不少项目团队开始在筹备或使用Angular 2开发他们的项目，也有大批的开发者们在开始学习或尝试在他们的开源代码项目中使用Angular 2。自从Angular.cn网站发布之后，中国的Angular开发者社区变得更加活跃，越来越多的开发者们参与到我们的社区中来积极进行分享、交流、以及互相帮助解决开发问题。

We have also organized a team of Angular experts to translate the new ng-book 2. We will retain the same quality standard and we aim to publish the book shortly after the official release of Angular 2. We hope this will help Angular 2 take off to a flying start in China!
我们还组织了一个Angular专家团队来准备翻译并出版ng-book2。我们将坚持同样的质量标准和高效率，争取能在官方发布后不久就让本书面世，为Angular中文社区来一个开门红。

The workload for the localization is not the lightest, however it has given us great sense of accomplishment and helped us build influence in our community. If you want to contribute and at the same time obtain recognition from the community, this is the opportunity you do not want to miss. Only a strong community can feed the ever growing job market, which is crucial for business success. More importantly, in the process of building up our community, we will meet countless good friends - maybe, we are already friends, we are just waiting to discover each other.
